Sulfur dioxide is the most common, simplest, and irritating sulfur oxide. Its chemical formula is SO2, a colorless gas, and one of the main pollutants in the atmosphere. This gas is emitted when a volcano erupts, and sulfur dioxide is also produced in many industrial processes.
Main uses of sulfur dioxide:
1. Used as an organic solvent and refrigerant, and used to refine various lubricating oils.
2. Mainly used to produce sulfur trioxide, sulfuric acid, sulfite, thiosulfate, and also used as fumigant, preservative, disinfectant, reducing agent, etc.
3. Sulfur dioxide is a reducing bleaching agent allowed in China. It has a bleaching effect on food and has a strong inhibitory effect on oxidase in plant food. According to Chinese regulations, it can be used for wine and fruit wine, the maximum use amount is 0.25g/kg, and the residual amount shall not exceed 0.05g/kg.
4. Industrial sectors such as pesticides, man-made fibers, and dyes.
5. Used in the production of sulfur and as pesticides and fungicides.
