Carbonyl sulfide generally refers to carbonyl sulfide, also known as carbon oxysulfide or carbonyl sulfide, and is a colorless gas with the smell of rotten eggs under normal conditions. It is an inorganic carbon compound similar in structure to carbon disulfide and sulfur dioxide. The gaseous COS molecule is linear, and a carbon atom is connected to an oxygen atom and a sulfur atom by two double bonds. Carbon sulfide is stable in nature, but it will react strongly with oxidants, and will corrode metals in the presence of moisture. Combustible. It is toxic, but like hydrogen sulfide, it will make people underestimate its concentration in the air. It is easily soluble in water, ethanol and toluene.
Carbonyl sulfide is used as an intermediate in organic synthesis, and used in the pesticide industry to synthesize herbicides, chloramphenicol, oatmeal, and insecticide Bataan.
Carbon oxysulfide is the intermediate of carbamate herbicides such as He Cao Dan, Ye Yan Wei, Oat Di, Oat Di No. 2 and so on.
